PostHeaderIcon Introduction to Seramas

Seramas originated in Malaysia about 50 years ago, where they are called Sri Rama. Westerners anglicized the Malaysian name to Serama, perhaps because it’s easier to say.

Known as “the tiniest chicken in the world”, these diminutive birds are the number one housepet in their native Malaysia, surpassing dogs and cats for popularity.

Seramas have been bred specifically for pets. They have wonderful personalities, and can be kept in a guinea pig cage. They need to be kept indoors, especially in cold months, because they have not been adapated to temps below 50 (Malaysia doesn’t see a lot of cold weather!).

Seramas mature amazingly quickly. The little roosters sometimes start crowing at a few days of age, but usually they’re 4 to 6 weeks old before they start crowing.

Hens start laying at about 16 to 17 weeks of age, and they are very broody. People who have had both Seramas and Silkies say that the Seramas are broodier than silkies!

Of course, since Serama hens spend so much time raising chicks, you won’t see many eggs. The few eggs they do lay are very tiny and delicate.

You can learn more about Seramas from the Serama Council of North America, the best known American club for the breed.

Meet my Seramas! As I have more Seramas, I’ll add them to this page.

To me, Seramas are little fairy chickens, so what better way to name them than after fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters?

But I don’t name them haphazardly. I have to get to know a Serama before I decide what to name them. I like the name to match the bird’s plumage and/or personality.

Below are my Seramas by name, with with an explanation of why each one received a particular name.

PRINCE PHILLIP

Phillip got his name when I was naming a group of young Seramas after characters from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. Since he was the only boy in the bunch, naturally he needed to be named after the primary male character in that movie.

FAUNA

Fauna is named after one of the good fairies in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. Her color goes perfect with that name.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

FLORA

Flora is named after one of the good fairies in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. “Flora” means “flower”, and her color makes her look like a flower garden.

PETER PAN

You know who the character is, but the reason Peter earned that name is because he likes to FLYYYYY!!! I have to be careful when I take him out to handle him, because if he gets loose he goes flying all over the place.

Once when he was a chick with newly sprouted wings, I got a good laugh watching him trying to fly back and forth in the brooder box with great abandon and joy! If he had been a human boy, he would have been laughing with glee!

AURORA

Aurora is named after the main character in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. She’s so pretty and white with a necklace around her neck, it just suits her.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

PUSS-IN-BOOTS

Because he has feathered legs (hard to see in this pic). I call him Boots because Puss would sound strange.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

MERRIWEATHER

Merry is named after one of the good fairies in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. She’s such a sweetheart.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

BASHFUL

No doubt you know Bashful is one of the dwarfs in Disney’s Snow White. Bashful is the perfect name for this one because he’s shy and quiet.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

LITTLE MISS MUFFET

From the famous nursery rhyme (you know, Little Miss Muffet sat on a tuffet), she just looks like a Muffet to me.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

BO PEEP

Everyone knows who Little Bo Peep is. The name just fits her.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

DONKEY

From Donkey in the Shrek movies, and wow, is it the perfect name for him.

He’s short, adorably obnoxious, very talkative (he won’t shut up once he starts!), and he thinks he’s big stuff!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

BRIAR ROSE

Sleeping Beauty’s alternate name in the Disney movie. Rose looks like a flower with that pretty frizzled plumage.

UN-NAMED

Here’s a nice up-and-coming trio. I’ll take individual pics after I’ve named them.
